![]() So, maybe Lando suggested the carbon freezing equipment wasn’t specced for humans, yet he knew full well it was. C-3PO said it was fine and that prissy droid was known for saying things out loud that his companions wished he’d keep to himself. They said specifically in Empire that the Cloud City equipment wasn’t built for humans, but perhaps there was carbon freezing equipment elsewhere in the galaxy that was specifically tuned toward putting living creatures in the deep freeze. In short, Boba Fett started a fad that persisted 6 years later. As Fett went, so did other bounty hunters, many of which may have done business in Jabba’s palace where they could see Han Solo’s carbonite captivity with their own eyes. When Fett experienced the usefulness of carbon freezing bounties, he made it common practice. Why was it commonplace 6 years later in The Mandalorian? Picked and packed and ready to ship. Fett says, “ What if he doesn’t survive? He’s worth a lot to me…“ĭisney+’s The Mandalorian happens 6 years after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, so what changed in carbon freezing in those 6 years? It was portrayed as risky in Empire. Nobody trusted carbon freezing living beings in Empire Strikes Back, evidenced by OG Mandalorian Boba Fett, who clearly expresses his concerns to Darth Vader. That’s a huge shift from The Empire Strikes Back where an ad hoc experiment in Cloud City freezes Han Solo in carbonite in order to test the process before Darth Vader attempted to freeze Luke Skywalker as well. In fact, we see a fast-talking Mythrol, that the Madalorian had just captured, get the flash freeze treatment on the spot. ![]() In the opening episode of The Mandalorian, we see inside the Razor Crest, Dyn Jarren aka the Mandalorian’s ship, and he’s carrying several bounties who are frozen in carbonite. "::Bring it aboard and we'll free them.::" Hera says simply as the Phantom begins lifting into the air and to its docking port on the Ghost. Why is a living creature being frozen in carbonite in The Mandalorian so common when it seemed so risky in Empire Strikes Back? I'm guessing whoever's inside has been trapped since the Clone Wars." I tell her. It was coated in at least 3 inches of dust. "::What is it?::" She asks and I can tell she's curious. And we explored the cave over in the cliff and found something." Ezra tells her. "::Specteres 4 and 5 we're activating the Auto-Return tractor beam for the Phantom.::" I hear Hera's voice say over the coms. As we're securing the block inside, I see the bright lights of the Ghost. We guide the block through the cave system and back to the Phantom. "Already on it." I say as I activate the anti-grav and push it over. We can inform Hera of our discovery and figure out what to do from there." He suggests as I was approaching the block. "Whatever the reason the person inside is here for, we can leave it here." The symptoms rarely last for more than a day, and even more rarely can cause death." I inform him. It can include temporary stiffness, muscle weakness, numbness, deafness and blindness, or, rarely and on the other end of the scale, hypersensitivity, and/or confusion. Its what the galaxy calls the collection of temporary side-effects following a being's removal from long-term suspended animation in a block of carbonite. But victims are often left with what's called Hibernation Sickness. "Well, is there a way to free someone from carbonite?" "Oh." He says turning to look at the block of carbonite again. "I've heard rumors of one Old Rebublic General carbon-freezing himself and a small squad of his troops to infiltrate a Sepratist base one time, but I'm unsure wether its true or not." I watch as he takes in what I've just said and his face falls. There's a 65% of not surviving the actual freezing process." I explain. It masks their signal from lifeform scanners and is a great way for Bounty Hunters to transport their targets with zero worry of them escaping. "Carbon-freezing is the process in which liquid carbonite is flash-frozen into a solid state, encasing materials for transport in a very strong and very durable metal alloy. Such materials could even include lifeforms.
